And Now Ford Wants to Take the Mustang Off-Road?
Just when you thought Ford's off-road ambitions couldn't get much bigger, there's this:
The Mustang Baja.
According to recent reports, Ford is still working on an off-road version of the Mustang that has reportedly been shown to dealers under the Baja name.
Ford hasn't officially announced the vehicle, so don't head to your dealership with a deposit just yet. But this isn't the first time we've heard about it.
Ford reportedly showed dealers an off-road Mustang concept as far back as 2024, and the project is now said to remain in development.
And if the Baja name eventually makes production, that name alone tells us something.
This probably isn't intended to crawl over rocks alongside a Bronco.
It's potentially being built to go fast where the pavement ends.
Think lifted Mustang. Aggressive off-road tires. More ground clearance. Serious suspension travel. Underbody protection. And potentially all-wheel drive combined with V8 power.
In other words:
Take some Mustang DNA, mix in Ford's Raptor experience, and point the thing toward the desert.
Now step back and look at Ford's off-road portfolio.
You've got the Bronco.
The Bronco Raptor.
The Ranger Raptor.
The F-150 Raptor and Raptor R.
Ford's growing involvement in Dakar and off-road motorsports.
A mountain of patents involving off-road technology, vehicle recovery, camping, removable doors, roof systems and trail technology.
And now Ford is reportedly considering sending the Mustang into the dirt.
At some point, this stops looking like Ford simply building a few cool off-road vehicles.
It starts looking like a company attempting to make off-road performance one of the defining characteristics of the Ford brand.
And that brings us right back to the question we started with:
Is Ford trying to take over the off-road scene?
Because if Ford actually puts an off-road Mustang Baja next to the Bronco Raptor, Ranger Raptor and F-150 Raptor in its showrooms, the Blue Oval won't just be competing in the traditional 4x4 market.It'll be attacking off-road performance from almost every direction.
And suddenly, all those crazy Ford patents we've been watching make a little more sense.
