Wait a Minute… Is That a Bronco? Meet China’s GWM Tank 300 Hooke Edition
Take a quick look at the vehicle pictured above.
Round headlights.
Horizontal bars running through those headlights.
A big, upright grille.
Squared-off fenders.
A flat hood.
Boxy bodywork.
Chunky off-road tires.
If your first thought was “Ford Bronco,” you're probably not alone.
But that's not a Bronco.
It's the GWM Tank 300, and the newest hardcore version — called the Tank 300 Hooke Edition — is taking the Bronco-like formula and turning the off-road dial way up.
And when we say hardcore, we're not talking about some stickers, black wheels and an “Off-Road Edition” badge.
GWM has made some serious changes underneath this thing.
Okay… We're Going to Say It: It Looks Familiar
Put a sixth-generation Ford Bronco and a Tank 300 next to each other and there are some similarities that are pretty hard to ignore.
The round headlights bisected by horizontal lighting elements immediately bring the Bronco to mind. Then there's the upright grille, squared wheel openings, tall greenhouse and generally boxy proportions.
We're not the first ones to notice.
MotorTrend described the Tank 300 as essentially what might happen if a Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler had a baby, noting the Ford-like front end and Wrangler-like profile.
Autoblog was even more straightforward with a recent headline declaring:
“This Chinese SUV Looks Like a Ford Bronco.”
CarsGuide has similarly described the Tank 300 as resembling a combination of a Ford Bronco and five-door Suzuki Jimny.
So, yeah.
We're seeing it too.
But before we grab the pitchforks and start yelling “Bronco knockoff!”, there's an important piece of history worth mentioning.
The Timeline Makes Things Interesting
Ford officially revealed the reborn sixth-generation Bronco in July 2020.
GWM's original Tank 300 also made its public debut in China in July 2020.
Vehicles take years to design and develop, so the timeline makes it difficult to simply claim that GWM saw Ford reveal the Bronco and hurriedly copied it a few weeks later.
That doesn't mean the similarities aren't there.
They absolutely are.
It just means we'll leave the question of inspiration, coincidence or imitation up to you.
And honestly, that's only half the story.
