Jeep's New Electric SUV Draws Comparisons to the Ford Bronco

Jeep Recon vs Bronco.jpg

Jeep's upcoming electric SUV, the Recon, has sparked a lot of attention. Though Jeep claims the Recon is “inspired by the legendary Wrangler,” its design closely resembles the iconic Ford Bronco. As its official debut nears, new images of the SUV on a car carrier have revealed a strikingly familiar look.

Jeep’s Electric SUV: A Rival to the Ford Bronco?

Unveiled in 2022 as part of Jeep's ambitious plan to become the "global Zero-Emission SUV leader," the Recon is the third of Jeep's four planned electric SUVs. First came the Avenger, a compact electric SUV for Europe, followed by the Wagoneer S, a luxury SUV rolling out globally. Now, all eyes are on the Recon.

Expected to make its official debut by the end of the year, the Recon has already made waves with its Ford Bronco-like design, offering a sneak peek into the SUV’s future.

The Recon was built from the ground up to be “100% Jeep 4x4 and 100% zero emissions,” boasting features like the Selec-Terrain traction control system and an open-air feel. Initially expected to be an electric version of the Wrangler, recent spy photos suggest it might be more of a rival to the Ford Bronco.

With its official debut on the horizon, the Recon was recently spotted with minimal camouflage on a car carrier, and it’s clear this SUV bears more than a passing resemblance to the Bronco.

KindelAuto’s new video offers the closest look yet at the Recon, and it’s shaping up to be a sleek and capable electric SUV.

Jeep even took a playful jab at the Ford Bronco during last year’s Super Bowl, featuring the Recon racing past a Bronco on an off-road trail. The ad concluded with Harrison Ford quipping, “This Jeep makes me happy, even though my name is Ford.”

Off-Road Performance and Range: Can the Recon Compete?

Jeep’s former CEO, Christian Meunier, touted the Recon’s impressive off-road capability, claiming it would be able to conquer the famous Rubicon Trail — one of the most difficult off-road routes in the United States. He also promised that the electric SUV would have enough range to complete the trail and return to town for a recharge.

Jeep's parent company, Stellantis, filed a patent in May for a new three-speed gearbox designed for electric vehicles, potentially debuting in the Recon. This system could enhance the SUV's off-road performance without compromising its driving range.

Built on the same STLA Large platform as the Wagoneer S, the Recon is expected to offer at least 300 miles of driving range. It will likely be available in various trims, such as the Willys, Overland, and Moab models.

Pricing and Availability

The Jeep Recon EV is expected to hit showrooms as a 2026 model later this year. Prices are estimated to start at around $60,000, with higher-end trims like the Moab potentially reaching over $80,000.

The Big Question: Can the Recon Take on the Bronco?

Will Jeep’s new electric SUV stand up to the Ford Bronco in terms of off-road capability and overall appeal? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for updates later this year.
